Like many folks, my parents honeymooned at the Niagara Falls; probably not thinking one iota about the significance of this natural wonder. It probably didn't cross their mind that the Falls is part of the greater Niagara Escarpment that begins near Rochester, New York and continues as far south as Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, where I live.
Truthfully, up until recently, I didn't think it was all that important either -- I thought of it as just another tourist trap. But, once I met some of the interesting folks that have formed the Niagara Escarpment Resource Network (NERN).
NERN volunteers are passionate and well-versed in what makes the escarpment so important to our cultural and natural history. Their mission is to help us understand what we must do to protect her from development pressures, preserve the biodiversity in eastern North America’s oldest forests, sustain habitat for wildlife and migrating species, and protect the rich historical significance of this remarkable geologic feature.
The NERN folks have offered to come to Plum Island and enlighten us on the significance of this natural wonder on Saturday, August 1st. Come and join us!
Register here. See you soon!!
PS. Guess where our family vacation is this year?
