Preserving Memories

As what usually happens to me, I was searching for something else and found a box of photos of the early Plum Island years that I'd forgotten about.
The box had photos of the original eagles' nest that was along the trail, the first Lady's Slipper I'd ever seen, the Dwarf Lake Iris, volunteers that have moved on, and those who still capture the magic that Plum Island has to offer.
These photos are ancient ... taken on an old film camera ... the kind of pictures that you hope turned out because you might not get that shot again. How times have changed!
I am by no means a photographer, but I do try to take (many) pictures whenever I venture from home and, like Rachel Carson said, I wonder 'What if I knew I would never see it again?'
I've met REAL photographers that recognize the best photo opportunities and know how capture the moment. I need to learn how to do that.
Years ago, I introduced myself to the famed Door County photographer, Dave Heilman and asked him if he'd be interested in coming to Plum Island and sharing his secrets with novices like me. He agreed and as a perk, he offered to copy his tips and tricks to a flash drive for those who attend the field day workshop!
Guests who have attended his workshop comment what a great instructor is and how they felt more comfortable taking those memorable pictures now.
He'll be back on Plum Island Saturday, July 18th and Saturday, September 19th. Come and join us and rub elbows with a REAL photographer and aim to become one too!
