At the beginning of the 2023 season, staff from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and members of the FOPPI Historic Preservation & Restoration (HPR) committee made a site visit to Pilot Island.
They found that the waterproof sheeting that was installed on the light tower last year was holding strong and will buy plenty of time to raise funds for planned preservation work on the tower structure.
The team did notice that some shingles came off the main roof over the winter, yet overall the sheathing and shingles were holding strong.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hired contractor Moore Quality Exteriors to urgently perform repairs.
With that work complete, USFWS staff will return in the spring to check conditions and work with FOPPI to prioritize future preservation work.
