Dear Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands,
As a significant winter storm rolls across Door County, our thoughts are on the historic buildings of Plum and Pilot Islands. Watching the snow fall is a vivid reminder of the harsh elements these structures face—and why we are reaching out to you now.
We have a bold vision to transform the Plum Island Boathouse into a vibrant guest hub, featuring educational presentations and our new “Boatique” Nature Store. However, before we can open the doors, we must secure the building's future. Our restoration plan includes:
The Critical Priority: Replacing the 87-year-old original roof. We currently have a contractor’s bid of $391,000 for this essential work.
The Vision: Restoring historic shutters and overhead doors, adding electricity for presentations, and providing a fresh coat of protective paint.
The total capital project is estimated at $750,000. While that figure is significant, we know that by tackling these needs one by one, we will succeed. Will you help us start with the roof?
Please consider a gift of $50, $100, $500, or whatever amount is meaningful to you. Click below to donate electronically, or you may send a check to our PO Box.
If a financial gift isn't possible, please join us in person! Our monthly workdays begin May 16, 2026, and our Annual Meeting and Picnic is July 25, 2026. As spring wakes up the island, we hope you’ll hop on The Shoreline to see the natural beauty your support protects.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at friendsofplumandpilot@gmail.com.
Thank you for your time, and we hope to see you on the island this summer.
With gratitude,
Mary Beth Volmer
President, Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands
